The Belly People
Commercial: Medical Office Building
The Belly People was designed around three main values: healing, efficiency, and comfort.
It was created with the wellness of staff, patients, and family kept in mind. Both caregivers
and visitors have access to natural daylight, so that it can lighten moods and speed up the
healing process. A spa-like quality is expressed through neutral tones and natural finishes
such as wood and concrete, as well as hospitality-like amenities such as nourishment areas
stocked with healthy snacks. Visual and acoustical privacy are top-priority through
designing around the on-stage/off-stage theory. This gives clinicians private areas which
are spread throughout the floor plan, with easy access to the exam rooms around them. The
patients will be called to a particular colored hallway, and will never come in contact with
clinician work areas in the corridor. The core was kept as a zone of large public areas,
including the infusion suite and active waiting area, while each side is graced with exam
rooms and clinical offices. The infusion suite is able to house six patients with the option
to accommodate a friend or family member. A private room is located within the infusion
suite in the event that a visitor would need to take a phone call, and a nourishment area is
also included in this space. Overall, The Belly People provides a space for patients to relax
while they are receiving treatment, positive, uplifting distractions for family and friends,
and room for staff to re-center themselves throughout their shift.
